When contacted, Fernandes confirmed that he had quit on March 8 citing ‘personal reasons’ and added that a new Colva sarpanch would be soon elected from amidst his ruling panel of five panchas, who are still united.

Sources state that Fernandes stepped down as a part of mutual understanding of seat sharing among his group members. However, the name of the next Colva sarpanch is not being revealed as Fernandes is firmly opposed to the Benaulim NCP MLA Churchill Alemao and there are fears that the Benaulim legislator may pressurise the panchayat member to withdraw from the fray.
