MARGAO: The Colva Traffic Cell has reported a significant crackdown on traffic violations in the current year, booking a total of 17,722 cases and collecting an impressive amount of Rs 99,97,500 in fines from violators.
The violations encompassed a range of offenses, including driving without a license, seat belt, helmet, and permit, as well as instances of driving under the influence of alcohol, said Traffic Cell PI Filomeno Costa. Notably, 182 individuals were found driving under the influence, primarily along the coastal belt. Following the bookings, driving licences were seized, and case papers were forwarded to the relevant department.
Among the cases, 26 individuals were driving without a valid permit, and 1,291 were booked for not using a helmet, resulting in a fine collection of Rs 12,86,000. Additionally, 435 individuals faced penalties for driving without a seat belt, contributing Rs 4,51,500 to the overall fine amount.
Surprisingly, 26 persons were found driving without a valid licence, leading to a fine collection of Rs 1.33 lakh. A substantial number of 4,249 drivers were challaned for driving cars with tinted glasses, and Rs 21.44 lakh was collected as fines from this group.
PI Costa highlighted the comparison with the previous year, indicating that in 2022 during the same period, a total of 17,967 cases were booked, with Rs 71,75,450 collected as fines.
Apart from taking action against traffic violators, police personnel from the Colva Traffic Cell have been actively involved in educational initiatives. They have visited educational institutions to educate students about traffic rules, regulations, and safety measures.
