MAPUSA: A day after the inmates of Central Jail at Colvale protested the poor quality food provided to them, the Congress delegation on Saturday visited the jail to provide groceries, but the authorities refused to accept the stock.
The delegation led by Goa Pradesh Congress Committee vice president Sankalp Amonkar, general secretary Amarnath Panjikar and Janardhan Bhandari and other members claimed that due to non-availability of groceries, the jail inmates are not provided with required food and since they have taken the initiative to provide groceries to the needy, they went to the Central Jail with the stock of groceries.
Amonkar said, “It is sad to see that this government does not have the budget to buy groceries and feed the inmates in the central jail. If this government cannot provide required food to the jail inmates, how can this government take care of the whole State? We came here to provide stock of groceries, but officials refused to take.”
Panjikar slammed the government for not accepting the groceries from Congress and for “buying” the Congress MLAs to run the government.
“We condemn this government for accepting Congress MLAs and running the government, but refusing to take the groceries from Congress. This government requires permission to accept groceries from Congress, but they don’t need permission to buy Congress MLAs and form the government illegally,” he alleged.
It may be recalled that the inmates of Central Jail at Colvale on Friday had protested the poor quality and quantity food provided to them.
Sources informed that the inmates were not provided with prescribed quantity of food by the authorities.
They further informed that Friday afternoon, due to shortage of onions and vegetables, the food for the inmates was cooked without onions. The inmates refused to consume the food and accused the authorities of not serving quality food. The authorities managed to convince the inmates to have lunch. In the evening, the inmates were adamant to return to their cells.
