MAPUSA: In a shocking revelation, the Colvale Central Jail staffers looking after 39 COVID-infected inmates have been working without Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, causing the virus to spread to the employees and their families as well.
According to reliable sources, the staffers are only provided with face shields and gloves and no PPE kits, which are not available. Earlier, two staffers, who were assigned duties at this isolated cell, have already contracted the infection.
Sources informed that while the infected inmates are shifted to the isolated cell, no special team of health officials has been made available. With no PPE kits, the jail doctor and jail staff members have been risking their lives by entering the cell to provide food and other essential items to the infected inmates.
They further stated that by coming in contact with the infected inmates, the staff and their family members have contracted the infection.
Sources informed that the relative of a jail staff got infected and has been shifted to the ESI Hospital while, the mother of another jail employee, who contracted the infection, has been shifted to COVID Care Centre.
