MAPUSA: The Colvale police cracked the ‘white gold’ theft case and arrested Mohammad Parvez Yameen, a native of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, for his alleged involvement in the crime.
North Goa Superintendent of Police Nidhin Valsan informed that the element of platinum, which is extracted from the catalytic converter of a four-wheeler silencer and has a wide demand in the international market, was seized by the police.
The 122 catalytic converters of four-wheelers costing Rs 8,000 each, worth Rs 9.76 lakh and 66 kgs of carbon/dust particles containing elements of platinum costing Rs 16,000, per kg, all worth Rs 10.56 lakh, were seized from his possession.
All items worth Rs 20.32 lakh were stolen from the four-wheelers in Goa and Maharashtra have been seized from his custody.
The accused was involved in stealing the catalytic converter of four-wheelers and further extracting elements of platinum from the carbon/dust from silencers and selling it to dealers in Pune and Delhi who would in turn process it into platinum metal and sell it in the international market at a high cost.
The investigating team headed by Colvale PI Somnath Mahajik consisted of PSI Mandar Parab, PSI Kunal Naik, HC Rama Naik, Anil Shetye, Sudhir Parab and PC Sulesh Naik, Suraj Redkar, Shalak Kalangutkar and HC Ramakant Kumralkar.
SP Valsan informed that the process of identifying if more people are involved in the rackets is in progress. Further investigation is in process.
