PERNEM: The pathetic condition of National Highway17 from Colvale to Patradevi has turned into a nightmare for the daily commuters.
The road has developed deep potholes and commuting on this road especially in the night has become difficult as one fails to identify the depth of the potholes.
Commuters, especially the motorists fall prey to the potholes causing them injury as well damaging their motorbikes. Leaving aside small part of the highway from Naibagh to Malpe petrol pump, almost 90 per cent of remaining highway from Patradevi to Colvale is in pathetic condition while putting life of common man at risk.
Even though the pathetic condition of road clearly visible, the concern authorities have turned a blind eye towards it and are not even bothered to fill up the potholes on temporary basis.
And even if temporary work is taken up, the concrete washes away either with rain water or due to continues movement of the vehicles. Due to the pathetic condition of road, several minor as well as major accidents are also witnessed on this highway stretch.
Also the narrow service roads are leading to traffic congestion since heavy vehicles cannot pass through smoothly specially opposite the Government College Pernem, where the PWD has constructed a narrow bridge.
A daily commuter Pradnya Thakur said, “Many a time my bike has fall into the pothole causing me injuries as well as my bike has been damaged. It becomes difficult to judge the depth of the potholes since there is no proper illumination along the highway in the night.”
