MARGAO: On the occasion of World Day Against Trafficking of Persons, a delegation of Goa Women’s Forum (GWF) met Salcete Sub-Divisional Magistrate Uday Prabhudesai and submitted a letter on the need to combat Human Trafficking for Commercial Sexual Exploitation (Prostitution) in SalceteTaluka, on Tuesday.
The GWF delegation pointed out to the SDM that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has chosen to focus in 2019 on the importance of Government Action in the interest of victims of Trafficking.
In the letter, GWF has pointed out that there are many cases of Human Trafficking for Commercial Sexual Exploitation (Prostitution) being booked by Goa Police and reported in various newspapers and the audiovisual media.
The GWF letter further pointed out that the cases of Human Trafficking for Commercial Sexual Exploitation (Prostitution) which is on the rise need to be stopped. However, this will be possible only if the local community is made aware of the exploitation that is taking place, the laws prevalent to combat this exploitation and the role of civil society.
GWF has requested the SDM to organise the awareness programme on the need to Combat Human Trafficking for Commercial Sexual Exploitation (Prostitution) in collaboration with the Integrated Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of Goa Police and ARZ, a social work organisation.
GWF has pointed out that the awareness programme to be held in Salcete Taluka would provide an opportunity to municipal councillors, panchayat members, NGOs, Women’s Cells, mahila mandals, legal aids cells, consumer forums and others to benefit from the same.
The SDM Prabhudesai gave a patient hearing to the GWF delegation and promised to take necessary steps to organise the awareness programme.
