Come Monday, Panjim fish market to buzz with activity

PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji market has been partially opened with restrictions, after having been shut for over a month owing to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, SOPs and the ongoing State curfew.

Chairman of CCP Market Committee Pramay Mainkar explained that earlier they had shut the market as there used to be overcrowding. At that point, he said the vendors had been allowed to operate near Inox.

He explained that they have now allowed the market to restart again but only two gates have been kept open.

He added that now they are making sure that there is no crowding inside the market and that once 10-15 customers leave the market, then only then next set of 10-15 customers will be allowed to let in.

Mainkar also informed that from Monday onwards the CCP would be opening the fish market. Only those vendors who are registered with the CCP would be allowed to operate.

Panjim Mayor Rohit Monserrate added that presently, only the fruit, vegetables, coconut vendors and the general stores have the permission to be open.

He emphasised that only 50 people are allowed to enter premises at a given time and that the CCP inspectors will be present to ensure that all SOPs and health protocols are followed inside the market.

On Saturday, the vendors also complained that there are vendors outside the market, due to which, there are fewer customers entering the market, which is also affecting their business.  They also feel it will take some time before they recover from this setback and trade returns to normalcy.
