Commission for Person with Disabilities issues notices to govt over child’s death

PANJIM: The Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has taken suo moto (on its own) cognisance of media reports that a seven-year-old girl, who was staying in a training-cum-production centre for children with disabilities in Old Goa, died due to burn injuries after falling in the hot bathtub. 

The Commission has issued notices to the North Goa District Magistrate, the Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, North and South and the Old Goa Police Inspector (PI) calling for a detailed report in the matter and has asked to submit action taken report on or before February 21, 2023. 

In its notice, the Commission noted that the aforementioned occurrence points to a violation of Section 7 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, which states protection of persons with disabilities from abuse, aggression, and exploitation.
