Committed to protecting farmers’ rights: Cong

Alleges BJP govt is busy in pleasing crony capitalist friends of PM

MARGAO: Launching nationwide protests against the farm bills, the Congress on Saturday alleged that the BJP government is busy in pleasing crony capitalist friends of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hence they have come out with three laws which are totally against farmers.

The Congress said it is committed to protecting farmers’ rights.

Speaking at the protest held at Lohia Maidan, Margao, South Goa District Congress President Joseph Dias said, “The “anti-people” BJP is living in a virtual world of glorifying Narendra Modi and hence cannot hear the cries of poor farmers.”

“Akali Dal from Punjab, which is the oldest ally of BJP, has now resigned from NDA protesting the new farm laws. The BJP needs to introspect on the same and learn lessons”, said Congress vice president Altinho Gomes.

Meanwhile, the Mahila Congress led by its president Pratima Coutinho protested the spiralling prices of onions.

The members sold onions at Rs 25 as mark of protest.

“The hoarding of onions has created mafia. Onions, which were sold at much less rates at horticulture outlets, are now being sold at Rs 80 per kg there,” Pratima claimed and accused the government of trying to fool people by offering onions through ration.
