Commotion at Dona Paula circle as residents, vendors object to traffic restriction towards jetty

Traffic Police restrain residents from plying private vehicles to their homes; vendors allege vehicles ferrying elderly and differently-abled tourists were not allowed

PANJIM: Tension rent the air at Dona Paula circle after the local vendors and residents were restrained by the Traffic Police from plying their private vehicles towards their homes and establishment on the jetty road stretch.

The vendors alleged that the police also didn’t allow the vehicles that were ferrying elderly and differently-abled tourists who could not walk to the iconic jetty which affected their business.

The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Councillor of the area Nelson Cabral said that the police action has irked the residents and demanded that the vehicles of the local residents and vendors be permitted on the said road stretch.

Panjim Traffic Cell PI Chetan Saulekar, who visited the spot, stated that there was a confusion among the staff posted on the duty and added that they have been briefed about the High Court order, according to which the vehicles of locals are allowed to ply on the road, and the vehicles of the tourists, who are persons with disability or those who are not able to walk due to any health reasons are to be allowed for pick and drop at the jetty.
