MARGAO: Squarely blaming the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) headed by Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, the Cuncolim Municipal Council on Friday demanded full compensation for the families hit by Tuesday’s flooding in the Sanvorcotto area of the town.
Taking strong cognisance of the fact that GSIDC Chairman and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has not visited the flood-affected areas of Cuncolim till date, the civic body has decided to serve a legal notice on the GSIDC to pay compensation to the families or in default to lodge a complaint with the police for the agency’s criminal negligence in erecting the pipe culvert in the rivulet, resulting in flooding of the area.
At a special meeting of the civic body on Friday which was chaired by municipal Chairperson Devendra Desai, the Council adopted unanimous resolution demanding full compensation for the affected families. The meeting also expressed gratitude to Pankaj Jain of Pooja Ferro Aloys and the owner of Rukhimini Rama unit for making available the heavy earthmoving machinery to clear the pipe culvert.
The CMC chairperson later told Herald that the meeting held the GSIDC responsible for the manmade disaster at Cuncolim and demanded full compensation for the affected families.
“It is our bitter experience that the affected are paid only peanuts in times of calamities. The CMC had resolved to ask the government to fully compensate the affected families”, he said.
