PANJIM: The Goa Human Rights Commission has directed Goa government to pay a compensation of Rs 30,000 to a senior citizen, who was ‘unjustifiably’ arrested by Panjim police in a zinc sheets theft case in July 2013.
In its inquiry report released on Wednesday, the three bench commission headed by Justice P K Mishra directed the government to pay compensation to Jose Octavio Rodrigues (73) within 30 days.
While slamming the police for its high handed approach in the case, the GHRC also mentioned that government “shall be open” to recover the amount of compensation from the erring police officials.
“The records indicate that the police have acted in a malafied intention to arrest Rodrigues… On the basis of material on record, we are satisfied that his arrest and detention is wholly unjustified. It appears that the complainant was arrested with ulterior motives,” the bench observed.
Rodrigues had approached the GHRC alleging Panjim police arrested him without conducting an inquiry in the theft case filed by Jessica Rodrigues. This, he argued violated his fundamental and human rights.
