MAPUSA: During a meeting of the representatives of 65 comunidades across the district, the North Goa Administrator of Comunidades decided to digitise all comunidade records and administer the archives. They also planned to install surveillance cameras and form an advisory committee to help protect comunidade lands from being encroached upon. The major issue of discussion was the blatant encroachment of comunidade properties and illegal houses that have come up on these lands.
“To prevent encroachments, the comunidades have full rights to protect their property but most of them are not active on the protection front. We called this meeting to awaken them, hear their views and problems and take the action required. It was a fruitful meeting; at least 75 to 100 people from different comunidades attended the meeting,” said Shivprasad Naik, Administrator of Comunidades, North Goa.
He informed the managing committee that digitisation of all records will ensure the safety of all the important comunidade documents and also assured the members that the archives room in the Administrator of Comunidades building has been put under lock and key and nobody, including staff, can get access to it without his permission. An Advisory Committee was also set up under the chairmanship of former president of Olaulim, Oldrin Pereira.
