MARGAO: Concerns over the growing menace of stray dogs on Goa’s beaches have prompted local authorities to seek immediate intervention.
Cavelossim sarpanch Dixon Vaz and panch Iris Passanha, along with Colva-based local fisherman Thomas Rodrigues, met with the South Goa District Collector on Tuesday, and submitted a memorandum demanding a solution under the Disaster Management Act.
The urgency of the issue was highlighted by a recent incident at Colva Beach, where a child was attacked by over 15 stray dogs. Fortunately, Rodrigues was present and able to rescue the child.
“Our tourists and locals can’t go for a walk on the beaches. There are complaints via emails and social media about the attacks, and we can’t do much on our own,” the sarpanch stated, emphasising the panchayat’s limited capacity to address the problem.
In the memorandum, the group proposed the establishment of two dog shelters, one in North Goa and another in South Goa, modelled after gaushalas (cow shelters). These shelters would provide care, treatment, and accommodation for sick, wounded, old, and puppies among the stray dog population.
Responding to the concerns, the South Goa Collector informed that a meeting with relevant departments and stakeholders will be convened next Friday to explore sustainable solutions to the stray dog issue on Goa’s beaches.
