PANJIM: The Opposition Congress Party on Thursday alleged that phone numbers of many party leaders are being illegally tapped by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its government through a private agency ahead of Goa Assembly poll results.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress House, here, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar and Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat alleged that the BJP has been using all sort of illegal means the latest being snooping on Congress leaders.
Chodankar charged that the Sawant government has hired a private agency to tap phones of prominent Congress leaders.
Claiming that right to privacy is a fundamental right and that nobody can violate it, he warned the government officials assisting the government in tapping of phones of Opposition leaders. The BJP is trying to know with whom we are personally speaking and what we are talking to them.
The Congress president alleged that BJP was using goons to threaten other party leaders.
Stating that the phone tapping is a serious issue, Kamat said that phones of Maharashtra Congress leaders were tapped following which complaints were filed against senior government officials there.
Later, a party delegation headed by Kamat met Director General of Police (DGP) I D Shukla and complained to him about phone tapping of prominent Congress leaders in the State.
