PANJIM: The Congress on Sunday demanded Health Minister Vishwajit Rane’s resignation over the goof-up at Goa Medical College (GMC) that saw illegal disposal of the body of Aldona local Januz Gonsalves.
The party also suspects foul play into the functioning of the anatomy department citing abrupt cancellation of the body’s post-mortem despite confirmed schedule on September 24, a day after Januz collapsed on the ground while playing football at Aldona.
“The health minister should resign taking moral responsibility for the incident. If he is feeling so bad for the family, let him step down as this is a case of cruel criminal negligence,” Congress spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar told a press conference.
The party also took a dig at the suspensions of the three GMC staff including the HoD of forensic science & toxicology stating it is just an eye-wash.
Panjikar also questioned the functioning of the post-mortem teams citing that Januz’s brother was informed about postponed autopsy after nearly two and half hours of taking the body for the procedure. “The brother identified the body to be taken for post-mortem. From 10 am to 12.30 pm, he was made to sit outside the autopsy lab and then sent back. He was told that the post-mortem cannot be conducted on that day. What is happening?” he questioned.
Slamming the poor governance in the State, Panjikar also blamed ill-equipped primary health centre at Aldona that resulted in delaying medical treatment to Januz on September 23.
