PANJIM: All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Girish Chodankar on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Principal Chief Engineer of Public Works Department demanding supply of drinking water to Panjim residents for ten hours daily.
“It is with utter dismay that I am submitting this memorandum to you on behalf of Panjim residents seeking regular and at least reasonable water supply of 10 hrs if not 24 hrs to the people living in Panjim constituency. It is obnoxious that the capital city and smart city itself is dry for majority part of the day while its residents are given water only for one or two hours a day,” he said in the memorandum.
Chodankar, who was the Congress candidate for the Panjim by-election said the party which has been closely working with the people has been receiving complaints that water supply is between 6.30 am and 7.30 pm, while the government has claimed that 48 MLD of water is supplied to the city.
“For last several years, people have been often raising this issue and they are dished out promise of 24-hr water supply. But that seems to be just a false assurance given as a time bargaining technique,” he said.
The Congress leader pointed out that Ribandar is worst affected and St Inez, Altinho, Mala, Portais, Cortim, Boca-de-Vaca, Campal, Miramar, market and other areas are no better.
“The Congress party demands that the people get minimum 10 hours of potable water, which is their basic right and till the time our demands are met, the government should release water twice in morning and evening and supply water through tankers at the cost of government by keeping the check on quality of water,” Chodankar said.
