Cong demands bone marrow transplant facility at GMC

Questions why the hospital needs 300 security guards

PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Sunday demanded the Health Minister to set up bone marrow transplant facility at the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital immediately.
GPCC also taunted saying instead of investing lakhs of rupees in terms of salaries to security guards at GMC, the State government should invest in better treatment facilities.
Addressing the media, GPCC Spokesperson Urfan Mulla said, “Today the State government is spending almost Rs 72-75 lakh in terms of salaries to security guards. Instead, they should invest in better treatment facilities. The question is whether GMC needs so many security guards and now recently there has been an advertisement for recruiting another 300 guards.”
He said, “Recently, a 12-year-old boy was admitted to GMC after which it was revealed that he was suffering from bone marrow cancer for which the GMC referred him to a Mumbai hospital. The patient’s father was from the labour class and the private hospital in Mumbai asked Rs 20 lakh for the treatment, now from where he will get the money. The big question why GMC does not have this bone marrow transplant facility?”
The spokesperson further informed that the expenditure for installing this facility is approximately Rs 30-40 lakh. “All government hospitals across the country have this bone marrow transplant facility, why Goans have to suffer? he asked.
“When an MLA needs treatment he is sent to other parts of country or even foreign countries but what about the people, why is the government not doing anything for them? I urge the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane to immediately start a bone marrow transplant facility at GMC which will immensely benefit our fellow Goans,” he added.
