PANJIM: Expressing fears over the bad state of the National Highways in the State, which are currently under road widening process, Congress has demanded the government to ensure road preparedness ahead of the monsoons.
Stating that the NH 17 has become dangerous and fatal, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) General Secretary Amarnath Panjikar said, “There are no safety measures ensured for the motorists all along the national highway which is under construction. When the project was taken up at least 50 per cent land acquisition should have happened, which hasn’t happened and people are suffering.”
He further said the fact that land acquisition has not been completed indicates lack of proper planning. “Wherever you go, one can see hill cutting for mud and boulders. The actual road widening work has stopped for want of mud and boulders. Service roads are in bad shape since they are made of fine metal stones and two-wheeler riders are at the greatest risk”, he added.
He said that the State Road Safety Council (SRSC) and National Road Safety Council have been formed under the Supreme Court guidelines and the Chief Minister heads (SRSC).“Neither the former CM late Manohar Parrikar nor the incumbent Chief Minister have walked on these roads,” Panjikar stated.
