PANJIM: The opposition Congress and the Goa Forward Party (GFP) on Thursday appealed to Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai not to sign the Ordinance amending the Goa Municipalities Act.
Both parties have decided to submit representations to the Governor, who is currently out of the station and would return on Saturday.
Condemning the government’s decision to bring an ordinance to amend the Goa Municipalities Act, Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira said, “We will submit a representation to Governor because he is the authority who is going to sign the Ordinance. Ordinance means that the ruling BJP has no faith in its own councillors. Does it mean councillors are not with you and disapprove of your defection?” he asked referring to the recent defection of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
Adv Ferreira said that it will be a tough challenge for the government to prove to the people that it has their support and mandate and face the test of election without amending the law.
GFP president Vijai Sardesai said that he spoke Governor telephonically and told him about the government’s continued attacks on democratic processes and people’s rights. He said that he has urged the Governor not to sign the Ordinance that has far-reaching and disastrous consequences for Goa.
