PANJIM: The Congress has taken a strong objection to State government’s decision to notify 56 villages in nine talukas as urban areas.
Herald had in its Sunday edition reported that 56 villages are notified as urban areas by the Revenue Secretary. These villages are in Pernem (4), Bardez (16), Bicholim (1), Sattari (1), Tiswadi (9), Ponda (9), Salcete (10), Mormugao (4) and Quepem (2).
Addressing media persons on Sunday, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesman Trajano D’Mello strongly condemned the Stat government for notifying these villages as urban areas.
“We condemn (the government for) the slow urbanisation of Goa. The villages, which are the charm and beauty of this beautiful State, are being destroyed by government under urbanisation,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, in tweet, rejected to the declaration of two of the villages from his Curtorim constituencies as urban areas.
He said that he won’t allow Curtorim and Raia (both villages notified in the list) to be made urban areas.
“We want our villages and we have maintained them not for the government to do what they want. Our people’s wishes are first,” the MLA tweeted.
Government sources have disclosed to Herald that the villages have been notified as per directions of Centre for taking up Census 2021.
