PANJIM: The Congress party has demanded an inquiry into the tendering of new six-lane cable stayed Zuari Bridge alleging the process was manipulated while also accusing the government for ignoring dangerous cracks on the existing Zuari Bridge.
Addressing a press conference in the capital on Wednesday, Party President Girish Chodankar has slammed the coalition government for risking the lives of the people through such acts. “The tender process for the new Zuari Bridge was manipulated because it was done to suit some player/s. We demand that government orders an inquiry into the entire tendering process,” he said.
The party leader, armed with RTI replies from the Public Works Department (PWD) has alleged serious danger to the existing Zuari Bridge as he pointed to various inspection documents. “One of the PWD inspection report states that there will be a deflection at expansion joint between P3 and P4, and recommended to look into it urgently. Another report by National Highway’s Chief Engineer put a restriction on the plying of vehicles above 12 tons. A notification was thereafter issued by the government on the restriction of vehicles weighing more than 16.5 tons, however the authorities have not acted,” he alleged citing that neither any visible signboards are placed on either sides of the Bridge nor are the officials monitoring the movement of the vehicles.
Condemning the ‘careless attitude’ of the government, Chodankar demanded that all the necessary tests of the Bridge be conducted to ensure the safety of the commuters.

….Lackluster IFFI
The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has taken a dig at the Goa government over a low-key inauguration of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held on Tuesday. Party President Girish Chodankar pointed at collapse in the State administration in absence of full-time Chief Minister, to the lackluster IFFI Inaugural.
“The way Goa government is deteriorating; it was shown at the inaugural of the film festival. The level of the festival has dropped and the main reason for this is because government does not exist,” he commented. The IFFI inaugural, for the very first time did not have the presence of Chief Minister and no celebrity from the film industry was invited as the chief guest.
