Cong protests over shooting at Mahatma’s effigy in UP

Says the act is an insult to the great leader; Wants govt to take suo motu cognisance; Demands action against Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha members

MAPUSA: Several Congressmen assembled near the Gandhi Chowk at Mapusa as part of the nationwide protest held by the party over the shooting at the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi by the members of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district.
The supporters shouted slogans and held placards highlighting his message of peace and at the same time condemned the act of shooting and burning the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi recently.
The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president, Girish Chodankar criticised the act of shooting and burning the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi.
GPCC spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar said the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi of peace, non-violence and unity should continue to be practiced in the country despite the attempts to suppress his teachings.
 “The members of the organization who wanted to finish the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi by shooting his effigy on Martyr’s Day should know that his way of thinking and ideologies still continue to thrive among people even after his death,” said Panjikar.
Mahila Congress president Pratima Coutinho said Gandhiji is in the hearts of every Indian and is known everywhere in the world.
 “I don’t think that there can be another leader like Mahatma Gandhi. He gave up everything and fought hard to give our country Independence. The terrorist after Independence was Nathuram Ghodse who killed our Mahatma Gandhi,” said Pratima.
Thivim MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar said the shooting at the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi is an insult to the great leader and the government should take suo motu cognisance and initiate action against the members of the organisation.
As a mark of respect to the Father of the Nation, the GPCC president along with other Congress office bearers garlanded that statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
