Cong reiterates demand for Assembly session

Wants BJP-led government to prove majority in the House; Says will put pressure on Centre and President to call for a session

PANJIM: Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National President Amit Shah for the current political chaos in Goa, Congress on Saturday said it will put pressure on the Central BJP leadership and also on the government during the Winter Session of the Parliament to summon a day-long Session of the Goa Assembly asking BJP-led ruling coalition to prove its majority on the floor of the House.
“Goa is a classic case of fraud being played on the people of Goa by Governor and the BJP at Centre. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are squarely responsible for the current political and administrative mess as they allow ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to continue in the chair,” All India Congress Committee (AICC) communication in charge Randip Singh Surjewala said.
“We will put pressure on Central BJP leadership and on the Modi government during the Winter Session to direct State government to hold special one-day session to prove majority. If required we will also approach the President of India for necessary directions to the Governor,” he said.
Surjewala said that a special session of Goa Assembly should be immediately convened asking BJP government to prove its majority and lay down a roadmap for governance and administration as also settlement of issues of Regional Plan, mining, Coastal Regulation Zone, unemployment and others.
“This will clear all doubts about who is in charge in Goa and the floor test will determine as to which party has the rightful claim to head a democratic government in people’s interest in Goa,” he added.
Congress in the past has made representations to President and Governor claiming they have a majority and can prove it provided an opportunity is given on the floor of the House.
Surjewala launched a scathing attack on Parrikar, even though he wished him a speedy recovery. “Last month Congress President Rahul Gandhi inquired about the health of CM Manohar Parrikar. Our good wishes remain with Parrikar but his deteriorating health can neither be a justification for unelected shenanigans of the BJP to usurp power through back door nor eclipse the aspiration of the people of Goa,” he said.
The AICC leader alleged that the Constitution is being held captive by BJP’s lust for power. He said that the clamour for power characterises complete breakdown of democracy in Goa.
“Paralysed governance, crippled administration and collapse of authority have become symbolical of the chaos prevailing in the BJP government in Goa. The corrupt, careless and conspiring BJP holds on to power in Goa in illegal and unconstitutional way,” he said.
The Congress questioned why not even a single health bulletin has been issued on the medical condition of the CM. “If CM is fine, as per the press statements, why is he refusing to meet even the Leader of Opposition and MLAs and interact with them?” he asked.
