MARGAO: Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Thursday said former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was the architect of digital India, who pioneered Information Technology and Telecommunication in the country.
South Goa District Congress Committee observed the Martyrdom Day of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by garlanding his photo and offering floral tributes.
GPCC president Girish Chodankar, vice president M K Shaikh, district president Joe Dias, general secretary Subhash Faldesai, district vice presidents Deepak Kharangate and Adv Yemane D’Souza and district treasurer Peter Gomes were present.
Paying tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary, Kamat said, “He will be remembered for his contribution to modernisation of India state.”
Offering tributes to Gandhi by remembering his contribution to Goa, Chodankar said “It was due to late PM Rajiv Gandhi, Goa got Statehood, Konkani as Official Language and Konkani was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.”
He said Rajiv Gandhi worked for empowerment of weaker sections of Society. Shaikh said, “Out of sheer love towards youth and his vision to make the youth of India successful, late Rajiv Gandhi made the constitutional amendments to enable the youth to vote after completing 18 years. Rajiv Gandhi brought special legislation to bring in reforms in the educational sector.
The Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress paid tributes to Rajiv Gandhi by distributing juice, snacks, sanitary napkins etc. to orphans in “Lar De Santa Thereza Home” in Margao.
