Cong suggests changes to Electricity Dept on bills

MARGAO: The Congress came down heavily on the Electricity Department with respect to the exorbitant bills the consumers across the State have been receiving and suggested various changes to help the common man.

Former power minister Aleixo Sequeira pointed out that the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) is just a recommendatory body and that it’s not binding on the government to accept their recommendations.

He was speaking on the backdrop of the complaints of exorbitant power bills in State and the changes in price slabs.

“The Congress government in 2007 to 2012 did not accept their recommendation of increasing the power tariff in the interest of the people of Goa,” Sequeira stated at the media briefing.

The former MLA said the State government must immediately allow the people to make cheque payments. He further added that that the Electricity Department must also start the drop box facility for the consumers, which will ensure social distancing.

He also urged the government to wave off the late payment fees and also demanded that a due date extension be given to the consumers.
