PORVORIM: The Opposition bench raised their concern over the recent agitation by dairy farmers after the milk supplied by them failed the test by Surat District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (SUMUL), at Kundaim.
Former CMs Digambar Kamat and Luizinho Faleiro expressed their apprehension over the incident wherein some agitated farmers poured around 400 litres of milk outside the Assembly complex on Monday to protest refusal to meet the legislators.
“This kind of an incident has never happened in Goa before. Does the govt have any control? The CM should intervene,” said Kamat.
Faleiro questioned if the schemes for farmers do reach out to them. “There is total farmers stress. Yesterday (Monday), the dairy farmers came on the streets. It is our duty to protect these people’s as they produce food for us,”he said.
CM Sawant, who held a meeting with the SUMUL farmers, was disturbed by the wastage of milk while advising the farmers to not resort to such moves
Faleiro also raised the query on the River Sal pollution. He sought the govt’s intervention into illegal structures along the river banks and stopping the sewage flow into the river.
“River Sal and its tributaries are highly polluted,” he said alleging that the govt, TCP and panchayats have allowed constructions of houses along the river banks leading to the river’s destruction. “The sewage from these houses flows into the river. We need to protect the ecology and the entire river. The govt should act against the illegal structures and those dumping sewage into it,” he said.
