Cong terms govt’s first anniversary as ‘year of unethical politics’

PANJIM: The Congress on Thursday termed one-year of Dr Pramod Sawant-led BJP government as “year of unethical politics”.

Sawant, who took over reins post death of former CM Manohar Parrikar, completed one year in chair.

Addressing media persons,  Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar said that the year has been full of lies, betrayals, disaster and of unethical politics.

“The way MLAs were purchased….mergers were done…is an example of unethical politics. Sawant mastered the art,” he charged.

Congress, which emerged as single largest party in 2017 elections with 18 seats, is currently left with only five MLAs. As many as 13 MLAs joined BJP, of which 12 were during Sawant tenure.

Chodankar said that people of Goa were betrayed on issues like Mhadei river, mining and employment. “BJP government sold Mhadei River for their political gains. It failed to resume mining activities, despite assurances and the unemployment touched 35 percent, which is highest in the country,” he said.

The Congress president demanded that government should release a white paper on Mhadei River, for public to know the efforts put in by successive governments to protect its interest.

He charged that the year has been of economic and financial disaster, collapse of administration and law and order, declining tourism sector, growing drug trade, scams, etc.

“This government has left no scope to praise them,” Chodankar said.

Speaking on coronavirus pandemic, Chodankar urged government not to create panic amongst public through fake news and also by disclosing names of the suspect.

The party also requested that the isolation ward be shifted from GMC, which is crowded with patients.
