PANJIM: The Congress party has decided to file a petition in court against the Laxmikant Parsekar-led government’s move to evict the fishing community residing at Baina, since 300-odd eviction notices have already been issued.
“My heart bleeds seeing the situation in Goa after returning from seven to eight years of national politics. Goa is already facing a financial crisis… I will take the matter to the court,” Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Luizinho Faleiro told media on Monday. The party leaders earlier met a delegation of women fisher folk who sought the party’s intervention to solve the crisis.
The government has ordered demolition of hundreds of structures on April 16 with a Congress MLA from Karnataka A Patil also lending support to the affected local families, most of which hail from Karnataka, demanding their rehabilitation.
Faleiro slammed the State government for its anti-people move reminding that BJP’s election manifesto had assured their rehabilitation.
“There are few self-employed locals existing and government is attempting to destroy them as well. According to me, the manifesto is a sacred word. It is an agreement between the party and the people. But the government has not lived up to its word,” he said in the presence of Congress general secretary Sunil Kawthankar and spokesperson Yatish Naik.
The GPCC president also condemned government’s decision to increase water tariff and proposed a hike in electricity tariff as well.
