Cong urges govt to clear stand on beef ban

PANJIM: After Karnataka introduced an anti-cow slaughter bill, the Congress Party in Goa has urged the Dr Pramod Sawant-led State government to make its stand clear on beef ban, considering the BJP’s nationwide policy to ban cow slaughter.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) media cell convenor Trajano D’Mello said that with majority of the ruling ministers and MLAs being voracious beef eaters, they should ask their government to clear its stand on the issue of beef ban.

He said that with Karnataka making a law to ban slaughtering of bulls and buffaloes, the supply of beef to Goa, which comes from Belgaum, will be severely affected.

He said that with beef already being scarce the prices are shooting up of all commodities like fish, vegetables, cereals etc beyond the reach of the common man which is likely to push him to starvation.

“The move will also have a serious impact on the hotel industry, serving beef, which had found a bug clientele among the tourists,” he said.

“Will the State government come out ‘black and white’ on the issue?” he questioned further seeking to know whether there is a hidden agenda behind BJP’s nationwide campaign against beef ban.

D’Mello pointed out how the State government has failed to grant any protection and relief to the beef suppliers in Goa. Also, he said the Goa Meat Complex (GMC), continues to remain shut, for slaughter.
