PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar on Thursday claimed that at least seven to eight BJP MLAs are unwilling to recontest on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) symbol, which he added has become a liability for them.
“At least seven to eight BJP MLAs have conveyed to their leadership that they cannot contest the upcoming Assembly elections on the BJP symbol again as they are not confident of winning on that symbol. They cannot recontest and win on BJP symbol. It has become liability for them,” Chodankar said.
He alleged that many of these MLAs had switched over to the BJP for the sake of money and power. “They had claimed that they joined BJP for development and they are now convinced that they cannot contest on the BJP symbol, which has become liability for these MLAs and they are now trying to contest on some other symbol,” he said.
When asked whether these insecure MLAs are in touch with the Congress, he claimed as far as defectors are concerned they will not be taken back into the party. He added other than defectors, many other sitting BJP MLAs and hardcore workers are in touch with him and that many BJP workers will join the Congress.
To another question that most of the MLAs who had defected to BJP solely for development are now happy that they were able to carry out all round development of their constituencies, Chodankar said that no constituency has seen any development, while no jobs were provided to unemployed youth. These MLAs could not fulfill their claims.
