MARGAO: Issuing an ultimatum of 15 days to the PWD and district authorities in Margao, the Goa Congress Youth Committee (GPYC) has demanded that the Government fixes the hazardous roads in South Goa, failing which they will escalate their protests and even approach the judiciary.
Pointing to the larger number of lives being lost in the state due to the increasing road accidents, South Goa President Mahesh Nadar blamed the government for failing to put in place adequate measures to ensure traffic can move smoothly and in a safe manner.
In its memorandum submitted to the authorities, GPYC said safety measures like crash barriers, proper signages, road marking and closure of unsafe crossings have not been implemented.
Nadar also criticised the authorities about the unending civil and sewerage works, which have left the state’s roads completely unmotorable even as the administration has done precious little to alleviate the hardships of the commuters.
He gave examples of bad roads like the one in front of the Margao bus stand and District Hospital, which have been dug up and there is bad lighting at night on top of that.
“Similarly, there are several other traffic ‘blackspots’ in and around Margao that need urgent redressal. The Powerhouse to Arlem highway is riddled with potential hazards for motorists, the Borda St Joaquim Chapel road needs additional speed breakers to curb speeding in view of the number of hospitals in the vicinity,” Nadar added.
