Congress hits back, tells BJP that mandate was in its favour

PANJIM: Countering BJP’s claim that Congress has lost credibility and hence people don’t want to be associated with them, the Congress in Goa took a dig at the saffron party recalling that the recent Assembly elections gave them the mandate and saw seven BJP ministers, including the Chief Minister, being defeated.
“BJP should understand and remember that the mandate given by the people in the just held Assembly election was against them. It was a mandate given to Congress. People supported us and elected our leaders against BJP candidates,” Congress media cell chairman Yatish Naik told media persons on Monday.
“BJP should not forget that people rejected them. Seven of their sitting ministers were shown the door. This included the then sitting Chief Minister who faced the most embarrassing defeat. This has never happened in the history of Goan politics,” he said.
BJP’s then chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar lost by more than 7000 votes to Congress’ Dayanand Sopte in Mandrem.
Naik statement comes two days after BJP national spokesperson Samit Patra, who was in Goa to highlight the achievements of the Narendra Modi government’s three years in power, has said “The party (Congress) which won majority seats couldn’t get support to form the government. People don’t want to get associated with them because they have lost the credibility. They are corrupt.”
Naik claimed that BJP has no achievements or performance to their credit in the last three years and hence speaking about Congress party which is ‘unfounded’.
Naik questioned Patra’s silence of Modi’s pre-election promise on Special Status to Goa.
