PANJIM: The Congress party on Monday held a ‘Freedom March’ in the capital city recalling the party’s immense contribution to the pre and post-Independence era of the country.

Addressing the participants at the Azad Maidan, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar said, “Congress Party is a movement which fought for the freedom of India. Congress Party’s immense contribution to the pre and post-independence era of India is eternal truth. Congress has immensely contributed to the development, progress and prosperity of India.”

He further said that it is due to the vision of leaders like Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and others that India could get Independence and the nation could progress fast.

Patkar claimed that no one will be able to tarnish the image of former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and other Congress leaders by creating false and fabricated narratives.

Congress working president and MLA Yuri Alemao said that most of the milestone policy decisions in socio-political sectors, science and technology, sports and culture, health and agriculture were taken by successive Congress governments. “No political party can deny the role of Congress in the significant progress of India,” he said.

South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha in his address urged the people to pass on the great history of India to the next generation and place before them facts and figures.

Earlier Capt Viriato Fernandes welcomed the Congress functionaries, who participated in the ‘Freedom March’ from Divja Circle to the Azad Maidan, to commemorate 75 years of Independence.

Veteran freedom fighter Rohidas alias Daad Dessai was felicitated on the occasion. Congress leaders also paid respect at the Martyr’s Memorial by offering floral tributes.

A documentary on “75 Years of India” was screened on the occasion and other cultural acts were performed during the event.

Congress chief spokesman Amarnath Panjikar conducted the programme. Earlier, in the morning, the GPCC president and other office-bearers hoisted the tricolour at the Congress House.
