PANJIM: In what can prove major boost to Congress’ disqualification petition filed against its 10 MLAs, who defected to BJP, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has informed the petitioner cum INC State President Girish Chodankar that it has received no communication with regards to merger of its legislative party wing with ruling saffron outfit.
The Congress disqualification petition filed before the Supreme Court has been adjourned by two weeks on technical grounds. The matter was heard on July 24.
Chodankar said he had sought information under RTI with ECI on June 18, asking whether any application seeking merger of INC legislative party in Goa Legislative Assembly with BJP has been received by the office of ECI and whether the same merger has been approved by the Commission.
The Commission in its reply has said, “There is no information/ communication in this regard in the commission”.
Chodankar in his petition before the Apex Court has termed the merger as illegal since there was no consent of the party.
GPCC to protest against BJP today
As part of the nationwide programme of AICC, its Goa unit has decided to hold a demonstration at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday to condemn the anti-democratic and anti-Constitutional acts of Narendra Modi-led BJP Government. The protest is against Central govt allegedly toppling of elected govt in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa and for now targeting Rajasthan.
