PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar on Thursday said that the way political parties were sending feelers to the Congress Party to forge pre-poll alliance shows that the grand old party has a strong organisation and is still a force to reckon with again.

Chodankar, whose fate now hangs in balance said, “Whether I am party president nor not, my nature is that I will continue to work with detachment. My commitment is to Congress Party and its ideology and we are committed to defeat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in elections.”

Recalling the Congress Party emerging as single largest party after 2017 Assembly elections, Chodankar said, “When we won 17 seats and when our morale was high, political parties weaned away from us. Even after our strength in Assembly was reduced to 15 MLAs same situation continued and now when we had five MLAs, these political parties are sending feelers to us for pre-poll alliance.”

“What does this show? He asked and said that the Congress Party is deep rooted in the State. Without naming the Goa Forward Party, he said that the some political parties during their brief honeymoon with the BJP were attacking the Opposition Congress. Today, the leaders of these parties are sending feelers to the Congress Party to have pre-poll alliance.

Chodankar claimed that the Congress has strengthened its organisation in the State party while many political leaders and new young faces started joining the party. Even former minister Alex Sequeira has come out of his political retirement and has become active in the party.

He said that he started focussing in the constituencies which were represented by rebel MLAs and gained confidence of the people. He said that people join the party only when they see hope in the party.
