MARGAO: Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat said the Congress is confident of winning the Zilla Parishad elections comfortably despite the tactics adopted by the BJP government to discourage the voters.
“The initial very low turnout in the morning was a clear indication of people’s resentment against the failure of the government to support them during critical times and in times of distress. The BJP tried to discourage people from voting as they fully knew that people’s sentiments are against the government. The tall claims of BJP of development and progress have fallen flat,” he claimed.
The Margao MLA said that the lukewarm response to the voting is a direct report card of the ruling BJP government.
“The enthusiasm would have been high among the voters if the government had performed. But they haven’t and this is the result,” said Digambar.
“The BJP used government machinery for campaigning. The Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers campaigned openly holding meetings despite the Model Code of Conduct being in force. The Opposition was not allowed even to go for door-to-door campaigns and hold indoor meetings,” Kamat charged.
“People came out in the afternoon and appeared to have anger against the BJP and its allies. People expressed full confidence in Congress candidates and have voted against candidates sponsored by the BJP and its A, B, C teams and allies,” he claimed.
“I visited some constituencies in the South, while Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar toured North Goa. The pulse of the people is pro-Congress,” said confident Kamat.
