PANJIM: A man, who allegedly duped as many as 130 locals of crores of rupees, was Friday arrested by the Economic Offences Cell (EOC) sleuths from Margao.
Akash Matti, 40, was absconding for some time after the duped victims lodged complaints against him. Police said, Matti had enticed over 2000 locals to invest in his company ‘St India’ and assured them to double their money.
“When the money invested in the company by 130 persons’ matured, they approached him to pay back the maturity amount to them,” the officer said quoting the complaint copies. Once the aggrieved victims approached the EOC and an FIR was registered, the accused went underground.
He was however located in Margao and arrested Friday. He had been running the company for three and half years. Police will produce him for remand before the local Court Saturday. The department has warned people against such individuals and business firms that seek handsome investment and assure illogical return within a short time.
