PANJIM: In a tragic accident, a 32-year-old police constable was killed in a collision between a car and a tempo on the Atal Setu bridge on Saturday evening.
The victim has been identified as Sandeep Naik from Merces. He was attached to the Anjuna police station.
According to information given by Porvorim PI Anant Gaonkar, the accident occurred when Naik lost control over his steering, jumped the divider and collided against the oncoming tempo which was heading towards Porvorim. The impact of this collision was so severe that the victim was thrown out of his car and succumbed due to severe head injury.
The Porvorim Police conducted the panchanama and sent the body to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim for post-mortem examination. Further investigations are on police, said.
It is learnt that this was the first fatal accident reported on the Atal Setu Bridge since it was opened for vehicular traffic in January 2019.
Two-wheeler rider killed at Amona
In another accident reported at the Ponda Police Station, Madan D’Souza, 25 of St Cruz was killed after the two-wheeler which he was riding collided against an oncoming tempo at Amona on Saturday.
The accident took place D’Souza along with one Vikas riding pillion were proceeding from St Cruz to Sanquelim while, the tempo was coming in the opposite direction.
The pillion rider Vikas has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. The Ponda Police conducted the panchanama and are conducting further investigations.
