Constables allege department biased on taking action against senior staff

Two constables suspended in Calangute demonetisation robbery, no action against PI and PSI

PANJIM: Director General of Police (DGP) Muktesh Chandar’s remark that no officers will be spared if found involved in nefarious activities may give a relief to the lower grade staff. However, there is discomfort among the head constables and constables who allege that the department is often biased when time comes to take action against the senior officers involved in major crimes.
There have been talks within the department that two constables were immediately suspended by the Goa Police when arrested in the robbery case of new denominations of Rs 10 lakhs at Calangute Police station whereas the role of a Police Inspector and Sub Inspector who interrogated the main accused has been wrapped within the four walls of the crime branch.
It is alleged by the main accused Dipak Gadekar that he has paid Rs 1.5 lakh to one of the Police Inspectors and Rs 30,000 to a Sub Inspector but the department is yet to initiate any inquiry against them. “This bias approach of the department creates discomfort among the lower level staff,” said one of the head constables.
The staff has pointed out other cases where Goa Police have failed to initiate action against a police officer who was allegedly linked with prostitution in the coastal belt.
The lower level officers have said that despite clear-cut evidence and the statement of victim girls on record the inspector was not touched by the department whereas based on the allegations the constables and head constables were immediately suspended in Calangute and Mapusa police station for having links with
pimps and their trade.
“This is total injustice; there should be one law for all the officers, and you cannot have two separate rules in a same house for same offences,” said one of the police inspectors from North Goa.
Superintendent of Police (Crime) Karthik Kashyap said that investigation in the case is presently underway and he cannot comment on it. He said that the role of everyone, who interrogated the main accused, is being verified.
Sources informed that the police inspector and the sub inspector have completely denied receiving a portion of robbed cash from Gadekar.
The Crime Branch has so far recovered 85% of the goods and cash approximately worth Rs 8.5 lakh whereas more Rs 1.5 lakh have to be recovered.
