Construction workers living in most unhygienic conditions, says panel

To inform govt about this so as to put pressure on builders to provide proper housing to labourers construction sites

VASCO: The Chairman of Central Building and Other Construction Workers’ Advisory Committee (CBOCWAC) Vedurlapally Srinivas Naidu said the panel’s observation at few construction sites in Goa revealed that construction workers in Goa are living in most unhygienic conditions.
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of 21st statutory meeting of CBOCWAC, western zone held at MPT guesthouse on Thursday. The meeting was called to understand the problems faced by the building and construction workers and to discuss about various schemes for labourers working on construction sites. As per CBOCWAC, it is estimated that around 8.5 million workers in the country are engaged in building and other construction works and they are the most vulnerable segments of the unorganised labour in India.
“The building and other construction works are characterized by the inherit risk to life of the workers. The works are also characterised by its casual nature, temporary relationship between employer and employee, uncertain working hours, lack of basic amenities and inadequacy of welfare facilities. We had visited two-three construction sites in Goa and we noticed that the condition of workers at these sites is very pathetic with no proper hygiene and sanitation. I will bring this to the notice of the government so as to put pressure on builders or contractors to provide proper housing to the labourers working at construction sites,” Naidu said.
