PANJIM: The contract BEd teachers have decided to withdraw their 24-day-old protest staged at Panjim after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar assured them that they would be given priority while filling up the new teacher’s posts, which will be advertised soon.

Sudhir Kesarkar of BEd Holders’ Association, told reporters Wednesday that they had called off the strike. “Our parents met the chief minister and he assured that we will be given priority when 325 posts of BEd teachers will be advertised,” he said.

More than 20 of the 200 contract teachers employed by the government last year had been camping outside the Customs office since a day before the State Legislative Assembly session began on March 17 demanding regularization of services.

Failing to get respite from the government, the teachers then resorted to indefinite hunger strike four days ago.

The aggrieved teachers had also demanded to abolish the system of appointing teachers on lecture and contract basis.

Parrikar last week had assured in the House that he would release advertisement for vacancies of BEd teachers and that marks will be given to them based on their present experience.
