MARGAO: A day after his arrest by Canacona police, building contractor Vishwas B Desai was on Wednesday remanded to 10 days police custody by Special Judge South Nutan Sardesai.
The accused was produced before the Special Judge this morning before he was remanded to police custody. The contractor was later whisked away by a waiting police escort party even as he tried to cover his face with a newspaper.
Meanwhile, the anticipatory bail application of former CMC engineer Ashank Gauncar came up for hearing before the Special Judge today. His lawyer Adv Amay Prabhudessai said that Ashank had no role in the episode except that he had calculated the amount towards the license fees. “The role of my client was only of technical nature. He has not signed any document”, Adv Prabhudessai said, even as Ashank was found seated in the open courtroom listening to the proceedings. He was on his feet when his lawyer drew attention of the Special Judge that his client is very much present in the court room and is ready to cooperate with the investigating agency.
Special Public Prosecutor Adv Rajiv Gomes, however, said that the municipal engineer had allegedly not conducted any site inspection and did not ensure that all the documents were on record. Hearing on his bail plea will continue on Thursday morning.
