Controversy over kabrastan at Khareband

Muslim body demands compensation for owners of land acquired for burial ground

MARGAO: There appears to be uncertainty over the issue of a burial place for the Muslim community with Urfan Mulla of the Anjuman Islahul Muslameen asserting that the Margao Municipal Council should resolve this issue and demanding that the government first compensate the people who had paid advance to purchase plots at the site at Khareband that is now acquired by the government for the kabrastan.
Speaking to media persons Urfan said the MMC abdicated its responsibility and renegade the agreement it had signed with the Jama Masjid over establishing the kabrastan at Sonsoddo. He also pointed out that many Hindus and Catholics including priests had supported the kabrastan at Sonsoddo.
However, he said the new government came with a proposal to set up the kabrastan at Khareband on the very land where some poor people had paid advance to purchase plots to construct their houses.
“The government should first pay compensation to these poor people numbering around 180 who have been struggling for the last three years to recover their hard earned money,” he said while admitting that the people had not paid the money to the government.
While not responding to a question as to why the so called people have not filed a complaint with the police till date, Urfan said that the person or middle man who duped these people should be booked and taken to task.
Replying to a question he said he is not opposed to the Kabrastan coming up at Khareband.
