Cooking gas pipeline damaged by ongoing Smart City work

PANJIM: Cooking gas pipeline was damaged due to ongoing work opposite Kamat Plaza at St Inez in the capital city on Friday.

Locals said that they heard a blast and gas started leaking from the pipe.

The Panjim Fire and Emergency Service personnel informed that there was gas leakage when they arrived at the scene. They also informed that the damage may have been caused due to JCB hitting the pipeline.

“We received information that there was leakage of gas at Kamat Plaza. We rushed to the spot and there we noticed gas emanating from the spot where smart city work is going on. A gas pipe got damaged. Upon inquiry, we found that it was pipe of natural gas used for cooking. It was not dangerous but it was combustible,” an official from Fire and Emergency Services said.

A St Inez resident said the workers deployed for the Smart City work did not have idea how deep the gas pipeline is and they went on digging.

”We rushed to the spot after hearing the deafening sound. However, nothing was damaged in the accident,” he said.
