Cop or robber? Lines blur as constable suspended for backing thieves to commit robberies

Suspension issued by DGP after Benaulim MLA informed that Kaushik was also involved in allegedly blackmailing businessmen

PANJIM: Is he a cop or a robber? Or a cop who backs robbers? In a unique case in the already colourful echelons of the Goa Police, Constable Vikas Kaushik of Goa Reserve Police (GRP) formerly attached to the Fatorda Police Station has been suspended for backing robbers.

Reports suggest that Police Constable Kaushik was also involved in promoting thieves to commit robberies in exchange of a share of the loot. Earlier, police inspector of Fatorda Police Station had filed a complaint against this constable for having involvement in several such cases.

The suspension was issued by Director General of Police Jaspal Singh after Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas raised an issue that Kaushik was involved in allegedly blackmailing businessmen.

It may be recalled that a robbery was reported in Bicholim Police Station’s jurisdiction which was investigated and the robber, Faizan Shaikh, was arrested. During the interrogation, the arrested robber revealed that Kaushik had sent him to North Goa to rob. “There is enough evidence to dismiss this constable,” said Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas.

“After the arrested robber Faizan during interrogation revealed the name of Kaushik, the Police Department transferred the constable to Goa Reserve Police instead of suspension. This happens even as a Minister demanded dismissal of this constable for committing robbery in the constituency of the Chief Minister,” Viegas said.
