HONDA: After two Dhangar community girls, Shivani Mote and Poonam Zore successfully completed their MBBS course from Goa Medical College (GMC) and created history, Coparde-based Bindiya Humane became the first homoeopathy doctor to fill a sixty-year-old void.

Bindiya pursued her primary education at the government school in Coparde and her secondary education was from Hanuman Vidyalaya, Valpoi. She received her HSS certificate from Bhumika High School, Poriem. Bindiya achieved her dream to become a doctor at the Shree Kamaxi Homeopathy Medical College and Hospital at Shiroda.

Bindiya had lost her father when she was studying in Standard 2 and her mother had taken the responsibility to raise the family. With continuous efforts and perseverance, apart from her mother’s support, Bindiya played achieved her dream.

The Dhangar community remained restricted to hilly areas of Sattari for more than three decades after liberation. However, the last three decades saw community members achieving greater heights, becoming engineers, advocates, teachers, geologists and so on. Though the generation had come far from their traditional profession to being respected professionals, a doctor’s degree was a feat yet to be achieved. While the neighbouring girls completed MBBS and received praises not only from their own community, OBC commission, associations and people from all over the state celebrated their feat.
