Cops act against motorists violating zebra crossing rules

PANJIM: Many who think it is ‘cool’ to park on zebra crossings or not allow pedestrians to cross the road safely, will now have to think twice before violating the Motor Vehicles’ Act, as Traffic Police on Wednesday began to crackdown on errant motorists/drivers.The drive across the State, with special focus in towns, saw several violators being penalised. In the North district over 190 violators were imposed penalties and warned against repeating the offence.A number of traffic personnel have been deployed at various zebra crossing points and junctions as part of the drive.
“Zebra crossings are intended to give pedestrians the right of way, but these are often ignored by riders/drivers. We are starting with a drive to ensure pedestrians cross the road safely using dedicated crossing zones/zebra crossing,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Rupinder Kumar had told the media before the launch.
