Cops act with laser speed on over speeding motorists

In two weeks over 1400 persons booked for breaking speed limits; Recommendations sent to RTO for suspension of licences; Motorists not happy with licence suspension

PANJIM: The Traffic Cell of Goa Police on Monday said that more than 1400 persons have been booked for over speeding in approximately two weeks since the deployment of the Laser Speed Radar Guns (LSRG) in the State to crack down on over speeding motorists.
Speaking to Herald, SP (Traffic) Dinraj Govekar said, “Since the Laser Speed Radar Guns have been deployed, till today over 1400 over speeding violation cases been booked and we have recommended these to the RTO for suspension of licenses. I do not have the number of how may licences have been suspended so far.”
He said, “These speed radars can be placed on roads which have signages showing the speed limit. Different roads have different speed limits. There are other violations also of jumping the red light, using mobile while driving, drunken driving, and carrying passengers in goods car.”
Motorists, however, are not thrilled with the bookings. Aaron Fernandes said, “The implementation of over speeding needs to be in a phased manner. The people need to be given time to adjust to the system. A black point system needs to be put in place where a
driver’s/rider’s license can be suspended for three months to a year after 30 or 50 black points are accumulated. There also need to be proper speed limit signages.”
Another motorist, Sean Faia, said, “I have come across a few friends who have had their licences suspended for over speeding on highways. It’s a bit harsh to have the licence suspended without any warnings. The implementation of over speeding needs to be in a phased manner.”
Goa Police procured the LSRGs as the number of accidents has been increasing over the years. “A detailed study revealed that over speeding and drunken driving are among the main causes of accidents and fatalities on Goan roads. In order to curtail the menace, Goa Police has acquired new laser speed radar guns and alcometers,” Govekar had said earlier.
In February, the State had cleared the traffic police proposal for these gadgets to crackdown on drunken driving and over speeding. Last year, around 4000 cases of drunken driving were booked across the State while nearly 800 have been booked for drunken driving this year till date.
